EN 166:2001 is a European technical performance standard for eye protection. Ensuring maximum protection in line with PPE (EU) regulation 2016/425, all safety eyewear across all our brands complies with EN166 as a minimum. The European standard applies to all types of safety eyewear including goggles, glasses and face shields to protect against a vast range of industrial hazards. Some of these hazards include optical radiation, impacts from flying objects, and impacts from hot solids, droplets, dust, and debris.

The full safety eyewear range has been independently tested with technical information marked on the lens and frame. The Personal Eye Protection European Standard (EN 166) covers a range of requirements and ratings. Some of these include Optical Class (Class 1, Class 2 or Class 3) which determines the clarity of the lens. Filter scale which relates to the filter type, tint and shade of the lens. Mechanical strength or impact resistance (A, B, F & S rating) with S offering the lowest impact resistance and A offering the highest (Impact ratings are restricted depending on the type of eyewear tested). The standard also contains optional tests where relevant, these cover Chemical, Electrical and Thermal risks plus Lens coatings (KN).

EN166 also incorporates several publications including EN169 (Welding), EN170 (Ultraviolet filters), EN171 (IR filters) and EN172 (Sun glare filters).
